Shine Your Light

“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” – Maya Angelou
“I wish I could show you when you are lonely or in darkness, the astonishing light of your own being.” – Hafiz
When life’s waters ferociously crash around us, what serves as our anchor? How do we stay centered amidst the storm? Are we able to shine our light to help friends or family find their way during difficulties?
Perhaps on this life journey, we can benefit from role models: those people who safely navigate through turmoil while also assisting others along the way. Like Mr. Rogers’ advice for turbulent times, we can always, “Look for the helpers.” There are numerous people who aid humanity simply by doing their small part where they can. They remind us to hold steadfastly onto hope.
Another useful anchor is the arts. We might find encouragement in books, music, plays, poetry, or various other forms of artistic expression. For example, if you’re feeling discouraged about climate change and the environment, I’ll be speaking at the Fonseca Theatre on August 3 about things we can do to create a healthier planet. (See event details here). This program includes a “Trash to Treasure” found objects art exhibit and is followed by the play “Micah Meets a Mami Wata” for young audiences. What I love about the Fonseca Theatre Company is its vision to inspire dialogue, deepen awareness, and offer insight into the challenges and beauty of the world around us. This theatre, founded by Bryan Fonseca, stands as a beacon of light within the community.
During this stormy period of transition in our human evolution, we are all being called to shine our inner light. Recently, I was listening to a song, “For Her Speak,” by MaMuse, with a poem by Lyla June Johnston. They sing a freedom prayer for our Earth home, saying, at this time, “Creator is sending her very best warriors. … and the only weapons that are useful in this battle are the weapons of truth, faith, and compassion.”
For those who live in the area, I hope to see you on August 3. You can also order Faith, Hope, Action: Ushering in a New Earth Era, Together, here.
Find ways to shine your light!
