Becoming a Transformative Force for Good

“No matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind.” – Taylor Swift
“Don’t ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.” – Michelle Obama
One of the hopeful things I was happy to discover when working on my new book, Faith, Hope, Action: Ushering in a New Earth Era, Together, was all the dedicated, passionate people I met who are helping their communities combat climate change. So many people—either individually or as part of an organization—are engaged in Earth care. They are planting neighborhood trees, participating in farmers markets, creating organic urban gardens, installing solar panels on rooftops or in yards, divesting from the fossil fuel industry, reducing (or eliminating) beef consumption, and advocating for environmental policies that safeguard our planet.
All of this care for creation requires effort, tenacity, and perseverance. But the rewards of such life-affirming actions can also be extremely fulfilling, especially when grounded in our deeply held values, such as compassion, kindness, empathy, and gratitude. And when motivated by love.
A spiritual life, centered in love, means we joyfully engage in the work of caring for this beautiful planet: our Earth home.
As we learn more about local Earth care activities that excite us, it becomes a wonderful opportunity to follow our innate purpose and ask how we might get more involved.
While exploring these possibilities, try asking: What gifts might I offer? What changes would make my community healthier?
Perhaps your gift (or your contribution to this world) is music or art? Perhaps you have connections to a school, place of worship, or local business that could benefit from additional environmental stewardship? Perhaps you are a parent or grandparent who can impart important Earth care knowledge to the next generation?
Becoming a force for good does not require you to be wealthy or famous. On the contrary, it’s often the combined collective actions of ordinary people that lead us forward in healing, transformative acts for good.
That’s a legacy worth pursuing as we create a new Earth era, together.
